Medical References & Revision Aids

Michael David is a now a post-CCT Senior Fellow in Hand Surgery working in the emerging Manchester Hand Unit based at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (Manchester).  He graduated in 2004 with a 1st Class degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of St. Andrews (2001) and a medical degree from the University of Manchester (2004).  He completed his MRCS within 2 years and became an Advanced Life Support Instructor before moving to Birmingham's Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.  He joined the Birmingham Orthopaedic Specialty Training Programme in August 2009 and rotated across several hospitals in the West Midlands (including University Hospital Birmingham Queen Elizabeth, The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, and Birmingham Children's Hospital).  In April 2015 he gained his FRCS (Tr & Orth) qualification, and is a trainee Fellow of the British Society for Surgeons of the Hand (BSSH).  Michael was awarded his CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedics in November 2016 and is registered on the GMC's Specialist Register.  He has completed a post-CCT 12 month Fellowship at the Birmingham Hand Centre where he gained valuable experience in managing complex hand trauma and experience in nerve reconstruction and upper limb spasticity.

This website, formerly known as www.tharu.com, was created in 1997 as even as a student, Michael David understood the need for information to be available to the clinician at any time.  He used his online revision aids to study for finals without having to carry books around while he moved from hospital to hospital, or while he was in India during his elective training.  He continued to update the Orthopaedic Notes section as he prepared for his FRCS Tr & Orth examination, which he successfully completed on his first attempt in April 2015.   Since graduating, Michael David has lectured students and examined at both Universities of Manchester and Birmingham, and received a Post-Graduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee in 2017.

Michael has completed numerous NHS service improvement projects around the West Midlands hospitals, with his Spinal Surgery Tertiary Referral Patient Management System (written using Microsoft Visual Basic for Access) still in use at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.  Michael has published extensively in hand surgery, paediatric orthopaedic surgery, limb reconstructions surgery, spinal surgery and general trauma.  Michael is a contributing author to the e-Learning curriculum for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (in press), with a recent invited educational update on trigger finger published in the British Medical Journal (November 2017).  Michael hopes to complete his Diploma in Hand Surgery in March 2018 (in affiliation with the British Society of Surgery of the Hand and the University of Manchester).  Michael donates his own revision notes to students and colleagues alike, and continues to maintain this teaching website to ensure it remains up to date.  He asks simply that the work not be copied or misrepresented.
